Rocket Part Review : Aero Pack Quick Change Retainer

This lightweight motor retention system is available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 29mm all the way up to 98mm.

Each motor retainer consists of two parts, the body and the ring. The picture in the right shows one body (29mm) and three caps (29/38/54 mm). They all work the same way, regardless of size.

The body and ring can be purchased seperatly, which helps keep the cost down. For each rocket, you need only the retainer body. The cap can be shared amongst your rockets.

In case a rocket is ever lost, I prefer to have two caps in each size. If I lose a rocket, there's a backup cap ready for use.

When ordering these, you'll see that the bodies are available for Phenolic (PML) and other (fiberglass/paper) motor tubes (such as LOC). The same cap can be used with either retainer body.

A very nice add-on to the motor retention system is the adapters. Can't decide between a 29 or 38 mm motor mount in your new project? Go for the 38mm and adapt down to fly 29mm motors.

The Aero Pack retainers are said to work with all reload systems out there, which is a major benefit.

Another advantage is that there are no tools/pliers required to use the system. Simply twist off the cap, insert the motor and twist the cap back on. It couldn't be any easier.

Installation

The retainer body is attached to the motor tube with JB Weld. This can be done during construction or you can add the Quick Change to existing rockets.

The picture on the right shows a 38mm version on my level 2 certification rocket. As you can see, it was attached during construction.

Field Testing

The Aero Pack retainers are a personal favorite and most of my high power rockets are equiped with one. I also use it on some 29mm mid-power rockets.

Those rockets have flows with motors ranging from E to J without any trouble. It just works.
