Rocketry Gear Review : Airbrush & Propellant System by Testors

This airbrush system is being marketed as being easy to clean up and allowing for quick color changes.

It is a fairly low cost system, considering it includes everything you need (other than paint) to start spraying paint. Propellant refills can be purchased, or the kit can be used with a compressor.

Not being a big fan of elaborate cleanups made this airbrush kit a candidate for review. The promise of easy clean-up needed further investigation.

Airbrush & Propellant System
The method used to control the airbrush's paint flow is basic, the bottle cap is simply tightened (or loosened).

Items Included

The following items are included in this Testors boxed set.

    - single-action external mix airbrush with 6' hose
    - compressor adapter
    - pipette
    - 2 bottle caps
    - 2 cleaning wires
    - 3 empty paint bottles (1/2 oz)
    - can of ozone safe propellant (6 oz)

The kit doesn't include any paints. You can use most Testors Acryl paints (thinned with water). Thin to the consistency of milk. The pipette can be used to transfer paint (or thinner) to the paint bottles.

Examples

The model rockets listed below were painted using this air brush :

Pros

It works as advertised and is easy to use. It sprays paint and the flow can be controlled, somewhat. Works well for finishing model rockets.

Colors can indeed be changed quickly and clean-up is easy, as advertised. Simply rinse off the bottle cap and tubes with water (and soap if needed). Use the cleaning wires to prevent any clogging. The airbrush doesn't need to be disassembled for cleaning.

Being able to use it with a compressor can lower long-term operating cost. No need to buy propellant refills, once you invest in a compressor.

Cons

While it is a great set for a beginner, it is more a paint sprayer than it is an airbrush. It doesn't provide anywhere near as much control over paintflow as a real airbrush.

When used in wider paint settings, it tends to go throught paint rather quickly. Pay attention when using it in these settings to avoid wasting paint.
