Rocketry Gear Review : Model Car Spray Paint Set by Testors

While this acrylic spray paint set is intended for use on model cars, it appeared too interesting to not try it on model rockets and review the results.

Finishing rockets with new and vibrant colors is always a challenge. The colors included with this set are different from what you'd usually see on most rockets. They are model car colors, after all.

Testors Car Spray Paint Set

This could make these colors interesting for use on model rockets and make your rocket stand out at your next club launch.

Items Included

This set includes everything you need to start painting your model rockets right away.

    - 1 cap sprayer
    - 1 can of ozone-safe airbrush propellant
    - 5 bottles of acrylic, airbrush-ready, paint (1/4 oz each)
    - 1/2 bottle of primer
    - 1 glass mixing bottle with clip clap (28 mm), dip tube, and cleaning wire
    - instructions (one sheet)

Larger refill cans of propellant, and paint, can be purchased to keep using the set over and over.

While most acrylic paints can be used, some will need to be thinned with water or acrylic paint thinner. The thinning method depends on the exact brand of paint used. Water can usually be used for Testors brand acrylic paints.

Pros

The paints are non-toxic and any mess you make can be cleaned up with water (and a little soap if needed). Simply be sure to clean up, or correct any errors, before the acrylic paint dries. Once dry, acrylic dried paint solvent must be used.

In addition to easy cleanup, this spray paint set is easy to use. Be sure to read and follow the instructions for correct usage and the best results possible.

It sprays a nice, fairly focused, mist of paint. Once you get used to the technique, quality results can be achieved quickly and with minimal effort. You don't move the sprayer (or can) while painting, you only move the rocket (or other object) to be painted instead.

This set is inexpensive, considering it comes with a starter can of airbrush propellant and 5 colors of paint (be it small bottles).

Cons

The bottles of paint provided with the set are small. To ensure you have enough to finish a project, try it on a smaller rocket (or part of a rocket) first. This will give you an idea of what area a 1/4 oz bottle of paint will cover with the number of coats desired.

Rockets painted with this set

Some of these models followed the paint scheme suggested in the instructions provided with the kit, others were given a different look.

Possible color combinations are limited only by your creativity and imagination.
