Model Rocket Review : 29 mm Stealth - Art Applewhite Rockets

Overall, this kit is pretty easy to build and doesn't take long to assemble. The hardest part, by far, is cutting beveled edges into the sides of the Stealth.

The 29mm version costs $15 (includes shipping) and is available only in black. The one built for review painted, as shown in the image on the right.

The Stealth uses autorotation as a recovery method. In other words, it helicopters down. This makes it quick and easy to prep for flight.

Parts List

The kit arrived in the customary clear plastic bag with the items listed below.

    - foam board sheet
    - pre-cut bottom section
    - 29mm motor mount tube
    - instruction sheet
No special tools or supplies are required to build the Stealth model rocket. A hobby knife and some white glue are all you need.

Construction

First, the templates are cut out. They will be used to cut the sides out the of foamboard.

The launch lug holes had not yet been cut out of the templates in the picture on the right. This hole is cut cut on one of the 3 sides, the other two don't need one.

Cut out templates

Cutting out the three sides is easy. The tricky part is cutting a beveled edge into them. The trick appears to be to use a sharp/fresh blade and to move the knife up and down as you go. Trying to make too long a cut at once won't result in a clean cut in the foam part of the board.

The three sides are assembled and glued together. Here you see the assembly with the glue fillets drying.

Assembly

The bottom section came pre-cut. It, along with the motor mount tube, are glued into the construction shown above. Add some more glue fillets and let dry. Your rocket is now ready to fly.

Finishing

Painting this rocket is optional. Most people probably don't. I decided to paint it, mainly to hide the bad job I did at cutting the sides.

The instructions say to put some glue on all exposed foam. Some micro-balloons were mixed in with the white glue for this step. This filled better than just plain glue.

After a coat of gray and white primer, the Dazzling Metallics (by DecoArt) acrylic paint was applied. The color is called Shimmering Silver. It was sprayed on with a cheap Testors Airbrush.

Flight Data

This model rocket can be flown on most (mid power) 29mm motors. Remove the ejection charge for single use motors, or simply don't install it for reloads.

This model is not suited for longer motors (longer than say the 29/40-120 case). For those, the Priority Stealth is better.

Not knowing how these fly, I selected an F20 single use motor for the first flight. Flew great and rotated on the way up and down. Fun rocket for small fields or those days where you just don't want to walk to far.
