Model Rocket Part Review : Sunward BT80 Baffle Kit

This baffle kit is to be used with BT80 body tubes, as the name suggests.

It can be used as a tube coupler, or glued into a section of a BT80 tube. The latter will be the case for existing model rockets or in cases where no tube coupler is needed during construction.

The rings are made of lite ply, to keep the overall weight of the ejection baffle as low as possible, while remaining very strong.

BT-80 Baffle Kit
Parts List

The BT80 baffle kit comes in a clear plastic bag, which is stapled shut on the top (over Sunward logo card).

    - 2 laser-cut lite ply baffle plates
    - 1 BT80 coupler tube
    - assembly instructions

Hobby supplies needed are a ruler, pencil, glue and a hobby knife. The hobby knife is used to cut off any loose pieces of wood which may be attached to the baffle plates.

Construction

Instructions are fully illustrated and provided in both French and English. Baffle installation instructions for both existing and new model rockets are also included.

Mark 1/8" inside one end of the tube. Glue the lower baffle plate into the tube, on the mark you just made. The picture on the right illustrates this step.

Now mark the other end of the tube 1/8" and glue the other plate at that mark. Be sure to line up the baffle plates so that there is no overlap in the holes.

If there is overlap in the holes in the plates, ejection particles could pass through that area and reach your rocket's parachute or streamer.

Baffle Kit
Once the glue dried, you're ready to use the baffle. You can also use some epoxy to give the baffle some extra strenght, at the cost of adding weight.

Field Testing

This baffle kit has been tested inside a re-build Estes Shadow on an F23-7FJ rocket motor without a problem.
